Regal wears the crown after taking the top price
Charolais animals once again returned to Welshpool on 11 November 2021, with a number of quality bulls and females being offered for sale. The sale saw 31 bulls find new homes, with an average price of £4857 and a 65% clearance. Meanwhile, nine females (two with calves-at-foot) also sold, with an average price of £2794.

Securing the top price of the day, at 8,000gns, was 18-month-old MONTGOMERY REGAL from Roberts & Jones of Llangadfan, Powys. Regal was sired by the easy-calving Gretnahouse Jugular, who was Supreme Champion at Carlisle in 2016. His dam is Montgomery Moli, a daughter of Balmyle Harlequin. Winning the bid and taking Regal home is J Jones & Co. of Bala, Gwynedd.

HENDY RAMBO sold for the next highest price of the day, at 7,500gns. Rambo was bred by J A W Rees of Llanidloes, Powys, and was sired by the renowned Blelack Digger. He was born to Hendy Marvel – a homebred daughter of Hendy Ivanhoe. Rambo will be making the trip back to Llanidloes, Powys, this time to the farm of winning bidder D A Davies & Son.

The 3rd highest price of the day, at 7,000gns, was obtained by one of the oldest bulls offered for sale: MONTGOMERY PATAGONIA. Like Regal, this 22-month-old is also from the stable of Roberts & Jones, and is another Gretnahouse Jugular son. Patagonia is out of Montgomery Manon, another daughter of Balmyle Harlequin. Patagonia caught the eye of R A Evans, who will be taking him home to Dolgellau, Gwynedd.

Coming in at the next highest price of 6,500gns was the Reserve Overall Champion, SPORTSMANS ROMAN. Roman is from the herd of Boden & Davies of Mellor, Stockport, and was sired by the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman. His dam is Sportsmans Lizzy, a daughter of the popular 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny. Winning the bid this time was R J B Tucker, who will be taking Roman back to his herd in Gower, Swansea.

The hammer came down at the next highest price of 6,000gns a total of four times, firstly for class winner ESGOB ROG from G M Jones of Bala, Gwynedd. This 21-month-old was born to Esgob Nen, a daughter of Goldstar Gentleman, and his sire is the 12,000gns Caylers Hustler. Rog will soon be settling into his new herd in Blackmill, Bridgend, under the care of winning bidders W L Williams & Partner.

The next bull to sell for 6,000gns was 19-month-old DOOLEY ROCKO, who had made the journey over from the herd of D Thornley in Swadlincote, Derbyshire. Rocko is out of Dooley Maddie, a Davally Igolo daughter who boasts an impressive calving ease EBV of +15.5. His sire is the 20,000gns Moncur General. Rocko caught the attention of winning bidder J Brown, who will be taking him home to Minehead, Somerset.

Next to reach a final price of 6,000gns was another Caylers Hustler son from G M Jones: ESGOB RIO. Rio is out of Esgob Maddie, a daughter of the popular Blelack Digger. Winning the bid this time was G Jerman, who will be introducing Rio to his herd in Newtown, Powys.

The final bull to sell for 6,000gns was WALDENCOURT REDWOOD, a charming young 16-month-old from Waldencourt Charolais in Newent, Gloucestershire. Redwood was born to Waldencourt Jessie, another daughter of Blelack Digger, and his sire is the 14,000gns easy-calver Westcarse Houdini. Taking Redwood home is winning bidder P A Cleave of Newton Abbot, Devon.

The day’s Overall Champion was HENDY RASPUTIN, who sold for a final price of 4,500gns. Rasputin is another from the herd of J A W Rees, and was sired by the Irish-born Lisnagre Nero. His dam is Hendy Hester, a daughter of the 19,000gns Corrie Alan. Rasputin will be journeying to Penclawdd, Swansea, to the holding of winning bidder G J Jones.
Two cow-and-calf duos from the herd of G G Morris of Brecon, Powys were sold for a final price of 3,700gns per pair. The first of these was CARGRIFF LEGACY and her 10-month-old bull calf CARGRIFF SAMURAI. Legacy was sired by Cargriff Homer, who boasts a notable calving ease EBV of +17.8, and she was born to Cargriff Hannah, a daughter of Balmoral Champion Rumsden Fawkes. Samurai was sired by Montgomery Ned, who G G Morris purchased back in 2018. Taking both Legacy and Samurai home is winning bidder J A Williams of Caersws, Powys.
The next cow-and-calf pair to be sold for 3,700gns was CARGRIFF MALTEASER and her heifer calf CARGRIFF SMARTIES. Like Legacy, Malteaser was also sired by the easy-calving Cargriff Homer. Her dam is Cargriff Honey, a daughter of Swalesmoor Bayonet. Meanwhile, Cargriff Smarties is another calf sired by Montgomery Ned. Taking this attractive pair home is R W L George of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
Last to be sold was a group of heifers, the class winner of which was GRAIGGOCH ROSIE, a 16-month-old maiden heifer from the herd of G Jones in Llanrwst, Conwy. Rosie was born to Graiggoch Mistique, a daughter of the well-known 16,000gns Clyth Diplomat. Her sire is the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny. Rosie will be making the lengthy journey over to Buxton, Derbyshire, to the home of winning bidder P W Lomas.
